Guide: Porting AOSP ROMs made simple, thanks to Mr. Highway

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 22:30

Android Kitchen

Have you ever wondered how to port an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) ROM? If so, you’ll be surprised to find out there’s not a whole heckuva lot to the process. In fact, Mr.Highway from XDA is so confident that anyone who can read and follow directions can do it that he decided to put together this step-by-step guide which explains the process from start to finish. Keep in mind, if this sounds like something that’s over your head, it might be best to pass on trying this. If you’ve got the cojones and you’re not intimidated by using Android Kitchen and Notepad++, take a look at the steps below.

Again, all credit goes to Mr.Highway, I did not devise this method, nor have I personally tested it.

Step 1. Well find the rom you want to port over, duh.

Step 2. Make sure you have the android kitchen and notepad++, on your computer an setup correctly.

Step 3. Put the rom your porting in the original update folder(ya know the one for the kitchen….)

Step 4. Setup a working folder, itll ask you the change the updater-script DON’T DO ANYTHING DO IT, leave it how it is!

Step 5. Find another base rom for your phone, preferably cm7, do the same thing your did to your port. Fyi: hope you labeled each working folder. an dont delete the working folder you just created, select yes to move it

Step 6. Copy the boot.img from the cm7 rom over to your port.

Step 7. Find the build.prop in your port. Right click on it, select “edit with notepad++”

Here’s where you need to read everything as I put it, if you mess up, well that’s not my problem .

Step 8. Find the “ro.product.device” “ro.product.board” “ro.product.product”. change those to your device.
If you cant remember the exact name of your device, look at the cm7 build.prop for reference. When you done that save it.

Step 9. Navigate to “META-INF\com\google\android” find the updater-script. Right click on it, edit with notepad++. (btw always use that program when editing stuff with android, soo much easier)

Step 10. Edit the device, board an product to match your device. If one of them is missing, don’t worry bout it. Then save it when your done.

Step 11. Navigate to system/lib/hw. Do that on both your port an cm7 rom. Copy the sensor, lights an gps from cm7 over to your port. Optional: delete the ones from the original device.

Step 12. Open the android kitchen back up again.
Type 99
Then hit 1.
Hit enter again
Sign the rom
You can either name the rom or not. Id suggest you so you don’t get confused by any other files.

If you followed this correctly, your rom should boot with no problem. If you get error 7 or 6, look below.

If you get error 7 in recovery, you didn’t edit your build.prop correctly. Go back an check it, find your mistake then, re-run it in the kitchen

If you get error 6 in recovery, you need to check your updater-script, you probably didn’t edit that correctly. Go find your mistake in it an fix it, then re-run it in the kitchen.

If you’d like to try this out, make sure to stop by the original thread to join in the discussion. Now, get in that kitchen and bake me up some AOSP goodness for the HTC Amaze, preferably in the flavor of an Ice Cream Sandwich. Just don’t burn down the house in the process, OK?

Verizon attempts to buy it all, T-Mobile requests FCC to stop Them

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 22:21

If you build it they will come. Well, it’s already built, so I guess if you buy it all they will have no choice but to come. At least I think that is Verizon’s plan anyways. What can you do when you have oodles of money, a huge customer base and the largest cell footprint in America. Buy more of course. It should be no surprise to you guys that Verizon is already working deals with various cable companies to purchase unused spectrum. They have deals in the works with Comcast, Time Warner and House Networks at the moment. The target spectrum purchase?? A grip of AWS band varieties which just so happen to be the userplane for their 4G technology. T-mobile has filed with the FCC to ask them to step in a prevent the sale of the spectrum to Verizon.

“The Transactions come before the Commission at a critical time for the future of competition in mobile services, and particularly in mobile broadband. Verizon Wireless, with its extensive holdings of valuable low-frequency spectrum, already has a significant advantage in the industry migration to LTE as the new wireless broadband standard. Its smaller competitors do not have excess spectrum in which to first warehouse bandwidth and later deploy LTE. With current spectrum holdings, their effort to deploy LTE is more complicated, costly and time consuming. Moreover, its smaller competitors are largely relegated to the higher frequency ranges, which are more difficult to deploy due to their propagation and building penetration characteristics, and their ability to keep up with demand as the industry evolves to the LTE standard will be significantly capacity constrained, to the detriment of competition. “

T-Mobile isn’t going to just sit back and let Verizon take up all the spectrum. They go on to say themselves and other smaller carriers would benefit greater from the spectrum. Saying they could put it to use ““…quickly, more intensively, and more efficiently than Verizon Wireless.” Now that is the T-Mobile I love to see. Go get em magenta!! Besides, what would Verizon do with it? Spend more money to implement it to new areas and have it crash ever couple of months? Maybe they should focus on what they have now and how to keep it up instead of buying more that they can’t support. Just my thoughts anyways.

ASUS drops teaser trailer for Padfone, no device in Sight

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 21:53

It is no secret that ASUS has some tricks up their sleeve at all times. We get the good news of Ice Cream Sandwich dropping for the Transformer Prime, and then they show us a quick look at a 7-inch Tegra 3 tablet they are making. What a bunch of sneaky jerks. That was all at CES. Now we have another major event less than a week away, Mobile World Congress. It is an even better stage for announcements and unveiling since it is all about the mobile world and they can’t be over shadowed by a Tegra 3 equipped Lamborghini. The expected offerings from ASUS this year should be focused around the Padfone.

The Padfone, for those of you that haven’t been paying attention, is the next greatest concoction of mobile communications simplified. There is a phone that will be running a Tegra 3 processor, Android 4.0 and be rocking a 4.3-inch display. Or so it has been hinted. Sounds cool, but not the selling point. There is also a tablet. A 10.1-inch tablet to be more precise. NO, they aren’t different products, it is all one product. You drop pop open a door on the tablet and click your phone inside and you now have a fully functional tablet running off your phone. The tablet has a screen, battery and speakers along with all the necessary electronics, but the processing power and brain is actually your phone. Sounds pretty amazing huh? I want one. The heck with a Prime.

The teaser that ASUS released for the upcoming MWC leaves you day dreaming about so much that it almost isn’t a teaser, its more of a slap in the face. If you expect to catch another glimpse of the device, you will be let down. They bring in the catch phrase of “Divided we stand, together we rock” and 1+1+1 = Endless Possibilities. We wonder if the second of the two is referring to the use of the TF201 keyboard dock for the Prime that can be used with the Padfone, or if it is referencing the potential Jelly Bean version that can bring everything to PCs too. Guess we will have to wait and see. For now, watch the clip.

Toshiba targeting end of Spring for Ice Cream Sandwich update to the Thrive

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 15:49

Yet another small bit of Ice Cream Sandwich news leaks out for us to dream about. Looks like Toshiba has a general time frame locked down for those of you sporting a Thrive. After relentless tweeting and questioning by many users, ToshibaUSA‘s twitter account finally responded with and answer. Although it is a bit vague, it is something. According to the response the Toshiba Thrive will hopefully see an ICS update landing by the end of Spring. Targeting and releasing are two completely different things though. We can hope that they make it, but if doesn’t hit until latter in the summer you can’t be to upset at them.

Flashback Video: Quick time lapse shows Android booth setup from MWC 2011

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 15:15

Mobile World Congress 2011 Android Booth

After seeing the latest YouTube video from , all I can think of is how much I wish I could go to the big show in Barcelona next Monday. While this is a flashback from Mobile World Congress 2011, it’s an awesome video for those who were unable to attend the show last year like myself. Unfortunately, Spain is a bit far for my budget at the moment, but the trip has definitely been added to my bucket list.

This 1:30 video gives us a time lapse view of last year’s Android booth being constructed from the ground up, as well as a look at some of the festivities that we all missed out on. Even if you did attend last year, this is still a cool video that will surely give you flashbacks and get you ready for MWC 2012 if you’re lucky enough to be going this year.

Did anyone else get the chills when they unveiled all the Andys like a scene from Frankenstein?

Combine RPG with Defense Strategy and you get Arel Wars from Gamevil in HD

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 14:47

Gamevil is on a roll this month. They released Zenonia 4, Baseball Superstars 2012 and Cartoon Wars in February, just that we have noticed. Just yesterday they released another title that mashes up some of our favorite game play genres into one massive game. Gamevil took the best elements of an RPG and added our favorite parts of a defense strategy game and rolled them into Arel Wars.

Choose your race, either the swift Hume, the resourceful Elven or the fierce Busters to battle across 120 stages over 8 different battle maps. You can control over 50 various units to rule supreme. Taking advantage of each units special skills can help you turn the tides in your favor. To bring the RPG aspect in, as you complete battles you level up your units, get booster items and customize and combine everything to give you the advantage. As much fun as playing alone can be, what is a good RPGish game with out some PVP battles? Gamevil gives you the ability that we have seen in many of their recent titles to connect to other players from around the globe and battle for world supremacy.

Arel
Arel 5
Arel 4
Arel 3
Arel 2
Arel 1

Best part, the game is free. As a freemium though, you can expect the real advantages to come from spending some real world cash and dealing with some ads.. File size you are looking at 11.98MBs, not dramatically huge and should only take a few seconds to download. The graphics are superb, even on my Galaxy S. The controls take a little bit of getting used to, but if you take the time to get through the brief training mode you will be on your way in no time. To snag this one up, simply click or scan the QR below and enjoy.

LG Cayman and DROID Fighter named in Verizon Workshop Leak

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 13:05

Looks like another set of mysterious devices are headed to the carrier that can’t keep their network running. A Verizon document has been spotted listing two new devices with employee workshops scheduled in the near future. Just because there are dates listed doesn’t mean the devices will launch on those days though. From past experience though, when a carrier does some training on a new device, the launch is right around the corner.

So what are they? Not sure just yet. With Mobile World Congress just around the corner though, we should find out shortly. With a tag line like ‘DROID’ it could be from Motorola, Samsung or HTC. We can hope that it is HTC and is the device we caught a look at last week. The one that had a remarkable resemblance to the DROID Incredible body styling. The one with the 1.2GHz dual-core processor and Super LCD screen. That is just a guess of course.

We fully expect the LG Cayman to be more of a mid to lower end LG device. It doesn’t make much sense to launch another high-end device to Verizon after they just launched the LG Spectrum. In the mobile game though, anything is really possible. We see carriers and manufacturers do some pretty insane and stupid things constantly.

Google Docs gets hefty update with real-time collaboration and More

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 12:38

If you’re a user of Google Docs, your experience is about to get a heckuva lot cooler, thanks to an update which arrived in the Android Market earlier today. The latest version is 1.0.54 and brings with it a bunch of new improvements, but the most exciting and interesting addition is definitely that of real-time collaboration. You can now see edits made to documents by other users within a matter of seconds. Not only will this add to productivity, but it looks pretty darn cool as well.

Also in this new version is a new Android-centric editor with rich text formatting (bold, italics, underline, font color, background color), layout tools (bulleted lists, numbered lists, indentation), and cursor presence and highlighting. Google really did an excellent job with this one, folks. I’m truly stoked to see what the future has in store.

Ice Cream Sandwich leaks for Acer Iconia Tab A100 and A501 ahead of Timeline

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 12:18

I don’t think there is a single Android or tech site out there right now that isn’t keeping close tabs on Ice Cream Sandwich device update information. The anticipation to get your favorite or recently purchased device moved to the latest and greatest Android OS is equivalent to a child waiting for Christmas morning. Lucky for us, Christmas comes early all the time.

The very good people over at XDA have located builds of ICS for both the A100 and A500 tablets by Acer. Forum member vache post the files earlier today for all to enjoy and try out. Most of the people who jumped on board right away are reporting that they are running smooth and relatively bug free. Root is no longer available, at least not just yet. We did a little digging into the forums themselves and found that the process is pretty straight forward and easy, but issues are arising with the A500 update.zip only working on A501 tablets. Being that it is a leak, we can’t complain too much about it. You can rest assured knowing that the community is already hard at work to get that resolved as well as root.

On the A100 side of things, every thing seems to be gravy. All the comments we read through say it is up and running and working great. Face unlock doesn’t seem to be working and there is no sign of the Acer ring or other bloatware. It is a very ICS styled experience.

As with any leak and flashing procedure, you assume all risks at attempting to use any of the files. One persons experience might not be the same for everyone. Also, these are pre-releases, so they are not final builds and could cause you more headaches than anything else. It is always highly recommended that you spend the time reading through the forum posts and learning everything you can from others before you pull the trigger.

Direct yourself over to the appropriate link below to take a gander, grab the file is need be and hope for the best.

HTC Teases Us Before Mobile World Congress. What is to Come?

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 11:40

HTC has teased us with that image above on the their Facebook page today. Many have speculated that it very could be the number of devices they plan unveiling at Mobile World Congress. HTC also wrote on their page that, “This Sunday you’ll discover something fast.” Bold words there, HTC. Could we finally see a full hands-on with the HTC One X (Edge), or something better?

I really hope HTC pulls out the big guns, and blows us away at MWC. I have always preferred HTC over the others, and I have an upgrade looming ahead. If they do not have any Ice Cream Sandwich-ness running on these new devices; I like many others, will be surely disappointed. Guess we will have to wait and see my Android friends.

Mod: Go tablet mode on CyanogenMOD 9 for the Atrix 4G with this simple Hack

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 11:07

Some people may have negative things to say about XDA, but let’s face it — it’s an amazing resource, and it can be a great place to go for community support, provided you can deal with a few bad seeds here and there (as is the case with any online forum or social network). In most cases, all it takes is the ability to read and carefully follow directions to make your phone do things you never dreamed it could do. That’s exactly the situation we’ve got here with this handy little mod for Motorola Atrix 4G owners, thanks to XDA Senior Member, AndroidON. If you’ve got a rooted Atrix running CyanogenMOD 9, AndroidON’s guide will allow you to run a Tablet UI on your phone.

In comparison to some modifications, this one is rather simple with only 6 quick steps that don’t require you to be a computer scientist or master coder to complete. Furthermore, if you just want to test it out for a few minutes and then return to your phone UI, the process to revert is just as easy.

I don’t personally own an Atrix, so I can’t confirm this mod works, nor can I offer assistance if you can’t get it to work. What I can do is point you to the original thread where you’ll find all the juicy info you need to apply this mod and start rocking a miniature tablet-style Atrix 4G with CM9. If you decide to try it out, let us know what you think, and be sure to thank the developer if you like it.

[Chrome Extension] Chat for Google, keeps you connected Easily

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 10:55

Sometimes we locate tools are extension that may not be Android specific, but offer something to our readers that we know they will appreciate seeing. This time it wasn’t out doing. You can thank Ryan Mills for that. This is an extension for all of us that use the Google Chrome browser as our main web browser, or those of you that have a Chromebook. It connects to your normal Google chat and once installed, provides you the same functionality as the Google Talk application that many of us have up and running all day. The key difference is this runs in the background and when a new chat comes in, it pops up from the bottom and stats on top of all your windows. Chat like normal and close the window. When your buddy replies it pops right back up. Beats switching to the talk app all the time. Another added benefit of the extension is the ability to instantly launch a Google+ Hangout from it. Giving this a dual function for staying connected.

Description Use the Chat for Google extension to connect and communicate. Chat for Google extension keeps you connected to all of your chat and Google+ contacts - No programs to download--install the extension and start chatting. - Chat windows stay open and active while you browse and move from tab to tab - Quickly launch Google+ Hangouts

If you are a big chatter, like many of us are, then this is one extension that you are going to have to check out. Direct your Chrome browser over to the Chat for Google Extension and get it installed. Be sure to let your friends know too.

Video: Float-N-Split Tablet Keyboard released by A.I. Type

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 10:28

Over the last few years we have seen a number of various alternative keyboards land on Android. It is nice to have options and not be tied into the stock keyboard if it doesn’t work out to be the best for you. While many focus purely on the need for a fast, easy to use and customizable keyboard for phones, very few work to offer a unique experience for tablet owners. They are generally just an inflated phone version ported over for tablet use. A.I. Type is changing all of that now with the introduction of the Float-N-Split tablet keyboard.

What makes the Float-N-Split so cool is the ability it has to be a standard full functioning keyboard that can be re-sized. Simply drag it up or down to adjust its size. You can switch to ‘thumb mode’ and it splits the keyboard in half. Each half can be re-sized independently or together.  They are also transparent. Allowing you to see through the keyboards background. There are dedicated numeric keys easily accessible by swiping up on the keyboard its self, as well as arrow keys for easy navigation in your text. The keyboard also offers the same customization as their other products like colors, background images, and unique themes to try out. They will be launching a full transparent theme soon that will make the keys transparent too. You really need to see it in action to appreciate the design and functionality, so check out the short video of it below.

For the international users out there, the keyboard also supports over 30 language layouts with context-sensitive text prediction for 9 languages: English, Hebrew, Spanish, German, Italian, Arabic, Russian, French and Dutch. With Greek, Turkish, Finnish, Swedish, Korean, Tagalog and more on the way soon.

If I had a tablet I would be all over this. The few times I have used a tablet the huge keyboard and need to set it down to type was always something that kept me from enjoying them. If you feel the same way, pop on into the market and pick up the Float-N-Split from A.I. Type today. It will run you $5.99, but they offer a personal 48 hour refund time frame. We have worked with them before on previous releases and they are a great company. They understand that 15 minutes for a keyboard test just isn’t long enough.

Developer: A.I.type
Cost: $5.99

[Alert] Asus drops Transformer Prime bootloader unlock Tool

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 08:44

In case you aren’t paying attention, today is February 22nd. Asus promised they would provide users with an unlock tool for those locked bootloaders has been successfully met. Even if just barely. I don’t know how you guys feel about Asus, but as of late, they seem to be one of the best manufacturers for device support and keeping promises. To bad others like Motorola can’t follow suit and keep their promises too. The tool is available now via their website, under utilities.

The tool comes with the general warning labels of impending doom and it is your own fault if you ruin your tablet. Nothing we all haven’t heard before.

If you have been long awaiting Asus to jump on board with the likes of HTC and free those bootloader chains, now is the time. Point your browser to Asus Support and have fun.

Is Another Verizon Data Outage Happening RIGHT NOW?

AndroidSPIN - Wed, 02/22/2012 - 08:25

We’re getting reports of intermittent data (3G and 4G) outages across the country this morning on Verizon. We’re not able to verify that it’s a nationwide or even a universal issue at this time, only that folks all over are affected.

Though this is the first large scale service interruption of the new year, it’s only been less than two months since the last one, and just over two months since the one before that.

As far as we can tell, this issue seemss to be affecting not only the 4G network and associated phones, but 3G devices and their connectivity as well. Subscribers have been reporting difficulties starting last night, around 15 hours ago, through this morning.

This is also not a uniform or complete outage, as users appear to be able to connect intermittently and utilize the data connection. Connections will intermittently and randomly drop and jump bands; 4G to 3G to no data, 3G to 1X to no signal, and various combinations thereof.

Are you experiencing issues? What phone do you run? Which bands are you having trouble with 3G? 4G? Both?
